Dying of a Broken Heart – Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah

Gravestone at Bonaventure Cemetery

Living in Savannah, I am lucky to be able to visit the locations that most people just read about, or visit a few times over the course of their lives. One of these places is Bonaventure Cemetery. Bonaventure is considered to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country.

Frequently I stop to read the headstones to see who is buried in front of me, as if somehow knowing their name makes some connection. I came across this headstone and couldn’t help but notice the dates of their deaths. Mildred dying on April 6th 2006 and then less than 2 weeks later her husband Buron passed on. I couldn’t help but to think of them, married since 1948, dying within just a few days of each other. Imagine a love soo strong as to be married for soo long, it couldn’t escape my mind that Mildred’s husband died of a broken heart. ┬áIt is actually quite sad.

These days too many people take marriage as they take so much in life, as something disposable and to be taken for granted. Our society as a whole has put soo much value on not being respectful, not adhering to the most basic of principles of decency, honesty and commitment. You don’t like something, you just throw it away, right? I think this is not a disease of our society, as much as it is a symptom of a much bigger problem. Mildred and Buron’s everlasting love, right up to the end, really touched me…

So, here is to Mildred and Buron…wherever you may be I hope you are together, still in as much love as you were while on this Earth…
