The Sergeant Jasper Monument in Madison Square

Historic Madison Square in Savannah

Being somewhat of a local expert I am often asked…if I had time to only visit one of Savannah’s Historic Squares while I am visiting Savannah, which one would it be? I always tell them Madison Square. Madison Square is one of the most beautiful Squares and has a number of historic homes and buildings surrounding it. This is the Sergeant William Jasper monument in Madison Square, one of Savannah’s more photogenic Squares. Also on Madison Square you can find the Green Meldrim House, the Sorrell Weed House and more.

Sergeant William Jasper died while recovering the colors of his regiment while breaking through the British defenses around Savannah. This happened all the way back on October 9th 1779. The display of history is just one more reason I love Savannah.
