Walking Historic Savannah at Night

The Mercer Williams House, at night in Savannah

Savannah Georgia is well know as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However, the vast majority of people who come to Savannah only get to see our historic homes and streets during the day. At night, Savannah takes on a new type of beauty. Slightly eerie, but beautiful as ever, we suggest checking out Savannah at night.

Touring Savannah at night has more than a few benefits. One of the biggest benefits of seeing Savannah at night is that you get to avoid the oppressive midday sun and humidity. Once the sun sets behind the horizon the temperatures fall and the humidity usually does too. This makes getting out and walking the streets of Savannah much more enjoyable. Especially if you’re from the North, you may find exploring Savannah at night much more enjoyable.

Savannah has an Eerie Beauty at Night

Savannah Georgia seems to change personality after dark. When walking around Savannah at night you’ll notice that there seems to be a mysterious vibe to the historic homes and streets in Savannah. During the day they are full of light, at night…well, there is just something about them that makes you think. Even the most beautiful historic home seems warm and inviting during the daytime. At night it almost feels like they are beckoning you to discover the mysteries that surround them.

It doesn’t hurt that many people consider Savannah Georgia one of the most haunted cities, if not the most haunted city in America. It isn’t terribly uncommon for one of Savannah’s visitors to have a runin with one of Savannah’s ghostly residents while walking the dark streets of Savannah at night. Ghost Tours are actually a very popular activity at night in Savannah. There are numerous ghost tour companies eager to take you to all of the haunted spots that Savannah has to offer.

One of my favorite places to walk at night in Savannah in Factors Walk. Located behind River Street this creepy area is a wonderful place for a night time stroll. The eerie shadows have a way of playing with your eyes, making you wonder if what you are looking at is a true shadow or something more ghostly.

Another great area to check out while walking around Savannah at night is the Bull Street corridor. Starting at City Hall you cam make your way down Bull Street hitting some of the most beautiful and historic Squares in Savannah. You’ll walk through Johnson Square, Wright Square, Chippewa Square, Madison Square and end up in Monterey Square. It is a beautiful walk, which takes on a whole new life after dark.

Stay safe at Night

Savannah is a pretty safe city, with a fairly low crime rate. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take caution while walking Savannah Georgia at night. It is always a good idea to never walk alone on the streets of Savannah after dark.

As long as you stay in the Historic District of Savannah you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Outside of the Historic District, well, that isn’t always the case. Obviously just stay aware of your surroundings.

So, while you’re in Savannah, please take the time to explore the streets and Squares of Savannah’s Historic District at night. You’ll have a great time and you’ll get to see Savannah in a way that most visitors to our city don’t. It is well worth the time.
